Lake Fire Remains 90 Percent Contained, Evacuation Orders Lifted (2024)

The Lake Fire remains 90% contained at 38,664 acres. There are 746 personnel on the scene. All evacuation orders have been lifted, as stated below.

Firefighters continue to engage in suppression repair and are making steady progress. The overall objective of these actions is to repair damage caused by fire suppression activities, to minimize environmental impact and to return impacted areas to pre-fire conditions as closely as possible. The majority of the work on the south side of the fire is complete. Crews and equipment continue to work on the north side of the fire. Terrain on the north end is more mountainous than the southern area and the roads are narrow. These conditions affect the rate of progress.

Afternoon temperatures for the Lake Fire will be in upper 90’s to low 100’s with minimum relative humidity from 12-28%. Winds will be out of the west, slightly stronger than they have been recently.

Effective Tuesday, July 23, 2024, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has cancelled all Evacuation Orders and Evacuation Warnings previously in place due to the Lake Fire. Take caution when returning home as emergency personnel continue working in the area. Remain vigilant of changing conditions.

The Los Padres National Forest Lake Fire Closure Area remains closed. All roads, trails, and recreational areas within this area continue to be closed.

Hunting and other recreational activities are not permitted in this area.
Residents and businesses located within the Fire Closure Area can enter with identification.
Some hiking trails may begin outside the Fire Closure Area and Lake Fire burn scar and cross into closed areas. Due to potentially unsafe conditions, avoid traveling all parts of these trails.

Returning Home:

The Lake Fire remains 90% contained at 38,664 acres. There are 925 personnel on the scene. Evacuation areas remain the same.

The heat signatures detected within the Lake Fire perimeter are decreasing with each passing day. Firefighters will continue to seek out and extinguish these smoldering spots until they are certain there is no longer a threat to the established control lines. Many of the hot spots are burning out on their own as heavy fuels burn down to ash. Many of the assigned resources are no longer needed and are being released from the incident to be reassigned to other fires or travel home for some well-earned rest. Total assigned personnel dropped to below 1,000 yesterday.

Fire managers are in the process of repositioning much of the heavy equipment previously assigned to the contingency group. Bulldozers, graders and other equipment are now tasked with repairing dozer lines and roadways impacted by fire operations.

Forecast for Monday: Persistent warmer and drier conditions continue with highs in the mid-90s to near 100 degrees mid-week. An excessive heat warning is in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday. Most of the fire area is above the marine layer that has developed each evening over the last few days. The vegetation above the marine layer has not been affected by the higher humidity at the lower levels..

The Lake Fire has reached 90% contained at 38,664 acres. There are 1,614 personnel on the scene. Evacuation areas remain the same.

Firefighters will continue to seek out and extinguish hot spots within the perimeter of the Lake Fire today. Most of the heat has been located in islands of unburned vegetation. Fire crews have been busy extinguishing these hot spots with support from helicopters. Fire behavior within these islands may increase later this week as temperatures rise and vegetation dries out.

Firefighters have begun the task of back hauling equipment used to protect structures in the area away from the immediate perimeter of the burn. Besides removing hose lines and pump systems around structures, the fire resistant wrap used to protect the historic Manzana Schoolhouse and Dabney Cabin will be removed.

Contingency lines were constructed ahead of the fire as a precautionary measure in the event the fire escaped primary control lines. Firefighters are constructing water bars and taking other measures along these lines to reduce the potential of erosion during the winter rains.

Forecast for Monday: Persistent warmer and drier conditions continue with highs in the mid-90s to near 100 degrees mid-week. An excessive heat warning is in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday.

Lake Fire Area Closure: Some roads and trails within the Los Padres National Forest are closed. Refer to theClosure Order&Closure Order Map by using links or visiting the Los Padres National Forest website. This closure will remain in effect until August 18, 2024, or until revised or rescinded.

Smoke: The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) have lifted the Air Quality Alert in the Santa Ynez Valley. The Air Quality Watch will remain in place countywide, and air quality conditions are forecasted to be good to moderate throughout the county.

As of today, Cal Fire Team 5 has completed their assignment. The Cal Fire San Luis Obispo Unit remains in unified command.. The North and South Zone structure has been dissolved.

On the west end of the fire near the Sisquoc drainage, firefighters continue to construct direct handline where possible. Infrared heat signatures observed using an unmanned aerial system (UAS) are diminishing. All of the observed heat is within the fire line. To the east, firefighters will be searching for heat in large areas of unburned fuels within the fire perimeter. Firefighters have begun suppression repair on contingency lines constructed ahead of the fire. This process will reduce the impacts of suppression efforts on the land.

The Lake Fire remains 73% contained at 38,663 acres. There are 2,055 personnel on the scene. Evacuation areas remain the same.

North Zone Fire Report:California Complex Incident Management Team 2 (CA-CIMT2) took command of the Lake Fire at 7 p.m. last night. An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 10:00 pm Wednesday. Overall fire activity remains quiet across the fire. Several Hotshot Crews remain “spiked out”, continuing to construct fire lines in steep, rugged portions in the northern part of the fire. An Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) will fly today to assist crews in locating and extinguishing hotspots and smoldering embers. Resource Advisors are working with crews to repair dozer lines, fences, and other features as a result of the firefighting efforts along containment lines. Ongoing Demobilization or reassignment of resources continues.

North Zone Fire Report: California Complex Incident Management Team 2 (CA-CIMT2) has arrived at the Lake Fire and will shadow with outgoing CA-CIMT13 today, before assuming command of the Lake Fire at 7 p.m. tonight. An Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) was flown again yesterday to assist crews in locating and extinguishing hotspots and smoldering embers. Shifting winds and an Excessive Heat Warning may increase activity and visible smoke from within the fire perimeter. Crews continue working to ensure the fire does not escape the existing perimeter. Demobilization or reassignment of resources will continue as crews complete their tasks and the fire increases in containment.

North and South Zone: The fire remains under Unified Command with California Complex Incident Management Team 13, CAL FIRE, Santa Barbara County Fire, and Santa Barbara County Sheriff.

North Zone Fire Report: Firefighters continue to extend containment line along the fire edge and add to the percentage of containment. An Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) is in use to detect heat from the air to assist crews in locating and extinguishing hotspots and smoldering embers. Shifting winds today and an extreme heat warning tomorrow may increase fire behavior. The use of fire retardant from aircraft has been very successful in assisting ground crews.

South Zone Fire Report: Fire held to control lines with no further growth expected, crews continue to mop up and pull hose. Small, isolated instances of heat remain interior. Effective Monday, July 15, 2024, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has cancelled several Evacuation Orders and Evacuation Warnings while maintaining orders and warnings in areas unsafe for the public.

Evacuation Orders remain in place for areas currently unsafe for the public to return to. These are remote areas, some without identifiable landmarks. See map for details.
Evacuation Warnings remain in place for:
- Area east of Kelly Canyon, north of Sisquoc River, west of La Brea Creek and Forest Route 10N06, and south of the Los Padres National Forest
- Area starting at the south end of Cachuma Creek, northeast of Santa Cruz Creek to Santa Cruz Peak, west through Grand Spring, and to the northern part of Cachuma Creek

The Lake Fire is now 38,430 acres at 34% containment.

North Zone Fire Report: Firefighters continue making good progress as increased humidity and cooler temperatures reduced fire activity. On the north portion of the fire perimeter, firefighters continue to secure the fire edge along the Sisquoc River. Crews will be inserted into remote portions of the Zaca Ridge area via helicopter to be positioned to increase containment lines. Along the southeast portion of the fire, firefighters continue “mop up” which is the finding and extinguishing of any smoldering materials near the fire line.

South Zone Fire Report: Crews are making continued progress strengthening control lines around the Lake Fire. There was decreased fire activity overnight due to improved weather conditions. The Happy Canyon and Figueroa Contingency Groups have completed construction of contingency lines.

Forecast Report for Monday: Highs in the 80s and lower 90s. Afternoon humidity values will trend slightly drier with readings forecast from 18-32% across much of the fire. Afternoon northwest winds 5-10 mph with gusts 15-20 mph.

The Lake Fire is now 38,523 acres with 34% containment and as of Sunday evening. Evacuation orders and warnings remain the same as Saturday but road closures have been updated.

North Zone Fire Report:Firefighters were able to make good progress as increased humidity and cooler temperatures reduced fire activity. On the north portion of the fire perimeter, the fire continues to slowly back down to the Sisquoc River and crews are working close to the fire’s edge. A new “spike camp” is situated in this area for firefighters. Around Zaca Ridge, spot fires near Davey Brown and Ranger Peak are being contained and tied into the main fire.

South Zone Fire Report:There was an increase in humidity overnight which brought a decrease in activity over the Lake Fire. There were some uphill runs of the fire in the early part of the evening. High temperatures are expected to rise to the mid-80s to lower 90s Sunday.

Forecast Report for Sunday: There will be a gradual transition back to a WNW flow pattern with a return to mostly clear skies as monsoonal moisture wanes. High temperatures rise into the mid-80s to near 90. General winds will be out of the WNW at 5-10 mph with gusts up to 15 mph during the afternoon hours.

The Lake Fire is now 37,872 acres with 19% containment and as of Saturday evening, evacuation orders and warnings have been adjusted.

Effective Saturday, July 13, 2024, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has issued the following changes to EVACUATION ORDERS AND EVACUATION WARNINGS:

Evacuation Orders DOWNGRADED to EVACUATION WARNINGS for:
- The area north of Chamberlin Ranch and properties located southwest of the 5200 block of Figueroa Mountain Road. This excludes the area to the east of Lisque Creek and north of the Sedgwick Reserve facilities, which remains in Evacuation Order.
- The Woodstock community and eastern parts of Oak Trail Estates.
- The area of KP Ranch west of Alisos Road, and includes parts of Estelle Vineyard Drive, Santa Agueda Creek, and Brinkerhoff Avenue.
Evacuation Warnings CANCELLED for:

The area east of Highway 154, north of Armour Ranch Road/Secretariate St, west of Alisos Rd, and south of the Woodstock and KP Ranch.
The area east of Figueroa Mountain Road, north of Highway 154, west of Calzada Ave/W Oak Trail Rd and south of Woodstock Rd.

A reminder for those persons now under an Evacuation Warning, you are still asked to be prepared to leave, if needed. Leave if you feel unsafe at any point. People with disabilities and people with large animals should consider remaining out of the evacuation warning area until the warning is cancelled.

FIRE ACTIVITY

North Zone Fire Activity:On the north portion of the fire perimeter, the fire continues to slowly back down to the Sisquoc River. Due to increased humidity, fire behavior today will be subdued, allowing crews to work closer to the fire edge. The fire continues to be more active in the Davey Brown area, Ranger Peak and Goat Rock areas. The fire is moving as planned to the established control lines, with crews focusing on any spot fires escaping those lines. Ground crews continue to work with various aircraft as needed to assist with suppression tactics.

South Zone Fire Activity:Firefighters continue to make good progress mopping up hot spots and strengthening control lines on the Lake Fire. Firefighters have conducted firing operations to create a buffer zone in areas of the fire, and they continue to strengthen control lines, identifying and extinguishing any remaining hot spots within the fire perimeter. Today, crews continue to actively fight fire while working on strengthening containment and control lines.

Forecast for Saturday:A 10-20% chance of mainly dry thunderstorms through the day capable of producing lightning strikes along with gusty outflow winds. Otherwise partly cloudy skies and slightly cooler with highs in the upper 80s to upper 90s. General winds Southwest 6-12 mph with gusts 20-25 mph but much stronger gusts possible with thunderstorm outflows.

North Zone Fire Activity:On the north end, the fire continues to slowly back down to the Sisquoc River.Fire crews have spent several days preparing this area to hold the fire at the river. The fire is slowly working its way down Lion Canyon. To the east, the fire continues to hold along Zaca Ridge. On the south end, the fire continues to actively move south and east through the Davey Brown area, Ranger Peak and Goat Rock areas. Once holding lines are secure, tactical firing operations will be used in the coming days to reduce burnable fuels ahead of the fire. Ground crews continue to work with various aircraft as needed to assist with suppression tactics.

South Zone Fire Activity:Firefighters have conducted firing operations to create a buffer zone in areas of the fire, and they continue to strengthen control lines, identifying and extinguishing any remaining hot spots within the fire perimeter. Today, crews continue to actively fight fire while working on strengthening containment and control lines.

Forecast for Friday: No significant changes are expected. Winds will remain in a westerly direction, with speeds generally light at 5-10 mph and gusts up to 15 mph, with some local gusts reaching 25 mph on ridges above 3500 feet. Afternoon highs will return to the 90s to near 100, with relative humidity values dropping to 10-20%.

Los Padres National Forest recreation areas with the Santa Barbara and Santa Lucia Ranger Districts may be impacted by smoke and ash from the Lake Fire. A portion of the Los Padres NF is closed, please refer to the Closure order and Closure map for further information.

The Lake Fire has reached 34,015 acres with 16% contained with 793 structures threatened.

The Unified Command announced the fire is now split into a North and South Zone as the fire expands in acreage and personnel, with two fire camps to support firefighting efforts.

An excessive heat warning continues with temperatures reaching 106 degrees on the fire line yesterday. Safety of firefighters and rapid medical response remains the top priority. Expect smoke over the fire today.

North Zone Fire Activity: The Lake Fire has not crossed Happy Canyon Road as crews hold the fire. The Davy Brown area has moderate fire behavior. Ground crews are doing good work in efforts to manage fire spread around the Sisquoc River Drainage. Tactical firing operations are working well to reduce burnable fuels ahead of the fire and continue today. Ground crews are working with various aircraft today to help with suppression tactics.

South North Zone Fire Activity: The fire has now been divided into two zones, the North Zone led by CIIMT13 with USFS and the South Zone led by IMT5 with CAL Fire. The purpose of zoning the fire is to ensure strategic, logistical, and operational functions are met; as this fire has grown in complexity. Today, crews continue to actively fight fire while working on strengthening containment and control lines.

Tactical firing operations will continue over the next couple of days on the south and south-east side of the fire to control fire spread. A large spot fire crossed the line Wednesday, but is being tied back via dozer line to the planned control lines. Westerly winds are assisting firefighters in keeping the fire from moving west toward ranches and communities.

Crews will be continuing to improve primary and contingency lines in the northern portion of the fire area with the intent of burning out along certain portions to create solid control lines. Along much of the east portions of the fire, little growth has been seen as the fire moves into the 2007 Zaca Fire scar.

As of Wednesday evening the Lake Fire has reached 29,187 acres with 16% containment. There are currently 590 structures threatened with four damaged, three damaged recreation residences and one damaged out building.

Today, crews extinguished hot spots, improved containment lines along the northeaster perimeter. Tactical firing operations went well ahead of the fire to control fire spread. The firing operation on the southeaster edge of the fire perimeter went as fire behavior analysts planned. This firing operation will keep the fire from impacting communities south of the fire in Los Olivos.

The fire perimeter is approximately 8 to 9 miles from Los Olivos.Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office has reported the fire has impacted approximately 1,165 people in the evacuation warning and 441 people in the evacuation order areas.

On Tuesday night the fire continued to burn, with crews going direct to ensure it remained within contingency lines. However, the U.S. Forest Service called it a “quiet night.”

There have been some firefighter injuries but they were not life threatening. Medical response has been quick and effective as firefighter safety remains the top priority. An excessive heat warning continues in the fire area.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office issued updated EVACUATION ORDERS and EVACUATION WARNINGS due to threats to life and safety caused by the Lake Fire. (see below)

Overnight aviation resources with Santa Barbara County were able to make water drops to prevent the fire from making significant growth. Fire activity continued in the overnight hours in the wilderness area on the east side of the fire footprint. It resulted in significant smoke and expanded evacuation orders for remote areas.

The main priority is to prevent the fire from moving toward communities to the south. There is a Red Flag Warning issued for the fire area with strong winds, potential for longer fire spotting distances along with hot, dry conditions. Damage assessments are ongoing as crews locate any structures impacted by the fire.

A smoke column was visible much of the day as a result of the Lake Fire burning up Figueroa Mountain around the day use area. There was not significant fire growth today because crews went direct with extinguishing spot fires.

The Lake Fire has now burned 20,320 acres and is 8% contained, as of Monday morning. The evacuation orders and warnings remain, see below for more information.

Overnight firefighters continued to construct containment lines along the southern fire perimeter. On the southwestern area of the fire, crews went direct to minimize fire growth and extinguish hot spots. Most of the fire ignition and growth continues along the southeast portion of the fire with fire growth continuing last night. The fire continues to burn in dry grass, brush, a timber.

Yesterday, aviation resources were able to limit fire growth, but were limited by poor visibility due to smoke. Additional fire growth is possible in the coming days with wind driving fire spread and record low moisture levels.

Lake Fire Remains 90 Percent Contained, Evacuation Orders Lifted (21)

Projected fire activity includes large growth and an increase in fire behavior. The fire will continue to spread to the southeast and in areas of available fuel. High-intensity burning, rapid rates of spread, torching/crowning, and mid-range spotting. Active fire growth and significant growth is expected Monday when the fire reaches slope reversals, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

In the next 24 hours, due to increased heat and decreased relative humidity, there is an additional increased chance of significant fire spread. Wind-driven to the south and upslope winds will continue to drive fire spread. In the next 48 hours, continued hot and dry weather combined with high fine fuel loading will result in continued fire spread, especially when slopes and wind align, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Fire crews will be focused on life and property for their top priorities. They will be providing structure protection to values at risk. When they are able to construct fire line on the fires edge they will do so. They are also constructing fire line in locations where they find opportunities for successfully stopping the advancing fire.

The Lake Fire is currently estimated at 16,452 acres with 0% containment, and continues to actively burn. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

A significant number of firefighting resources have been ordered for the incident, including hand-crews, engines, dozers, and fixed and rotor wing aircraft. A Complex Incident Management Team has taken operational control of the fire as of Sunday morning. This will allow the initial fire crews and managers to get some rest.

Fire crews currently assigned are fighting the fire aggressively with the public and their safety as the top priority.

People in this EVACUATION ORDER area should leave immediately.

The Red Cross has opened an evacuation shelter at Solvang Veterans Memorial (1745 Mission Dr, Solvang, CA 93463) for evacuees affected by the Lake Fire in Santa Barbara County.

The Lake Fire near Los Olivos has reached 12,227 acres with 0% containment as of 1:12 p.m. Saturday.

There are currently ten air tankers and three Type 1 helicopters assigned to the incident utilizing ridge lines, retardant, and water drops for perimeter control.

Fire crews currently assigned are fighting the fire aggressively with the public and their safety as the top priority.

The Sheriff’s Office has issued an EVACUATION WARNING for the areas north of Zaca Lake Road, east of Foxen Canyon Road, and South of the Sisquoc River. An EVACUATION WARNING is also issued for the areas of Figueroa Mountain Road from the Forest Station to Chamberlin Ranch. due to a wildfire.

As of 6:00 a.m. Saturday, the Lake Fire is estimated to be 4,673 Acres in sizeburning in grass, brush and timber.

“Extreme fire behavior with short-range and long-range spotting. The fire is burning with rapid rates of spread,” according to fire officials.

The fire area is in a red flag warning due to extremely high temperatures and low relative humidities.

In the next 24 hours the fire has potential for large growth. The fire will continue to burn to the northwest and south cardinal directions.

Local authorities advise residents within the evacuation warning area and close by to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Prepare family members, pets and essential items.

If you feel threatened at any time, leave immediately. Do not wait for an alert to evacuate. People with disabilities, access and functional needs should leave now. People with large animals should leave now, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters are on the scene of a growing brush fire near Zaca Lake.

The vegetation fire broke out at 3:46 p.m. Friday to the northeast of Figueroa Mountain near 5200 block of Figueroa Mountain Road. The fire has been named the “Lake Fire.”

US Forest Service and Santa Barbara County firefighters are on the scene including hand crews, dozers, and water tenders.

As of 5:30 p.m., the US Forest Service estimates the fire is approximately 296 acres in size and growing, mostly burning in grass.

The Zaca Lake Resort at 8000 Foxen Canyon Road in Los Olivos has been evacuated, per County Fire Department.

A fire appears to have started behind Grass Mountain, reportedly near Zaca Lake, at approximately 4PM. It’s growing very, very fast!!! Lots of fire equipment and air attack en route. Locals say it is being called the Sycamore Fire incident.
